"I wanted my son to become a pilot. All our dreams have been crushed”

"I miss my school, my friends, my teachers. I want it all that back”

Such are the pleas of thousands of refugee children and their parents who had to leave their home country and settle in the land unknown to them. Recognizing the need to bring about a transformation in the sphere of refugee children’s education, we initiated Project Taaleem.

Taaleem is a community-driven model to revolutionize the primary education sphere for the refugee community. And how do we do that? By using an Active Story Based Curriculum designed specifically for the community that also leverages the latest innovations in learning.

We believe refugee children are the future assets of the country, and we want to provide them the steppingstones they need. Storytelling takes the centre stage in our solution, which is fundamental to Early Childhood Development. It is an excellent vehicle for promoting and enhancing literacy and language development within families.

Every idea starts with a problem. Ours was: how to provide education to the refugee children, where they could move anytime. It turns out there was a simple solution: Adopting a community-based model for which the teacher is chosen from the community and is provided with the requisite training. We follow a 5-step process in our model:

Community Assessment

We carry out surveys to know about the children’s leaning ability.

Entrepreneur Identification

We identify an entrepreneur from the community having the requisite qualifications.

Centre Establishment & Mobilisation

Joining hands with Community Based Organisations, we establish Taaleem centres and make people aware about it.

Curriculum Development

Partnering with Katha, we develop a curriculum specifically designed to cater the needs of refugee children which follows an active Story based model.

Teacher Training

Teachers undergo training to get familiarized with the curriculum and the manner in which it has to be taught to the children .

We began our journey in the year 2018 with 80 students and one centre in Shaheen Bagh. Fast-forward to 2021, we have in total 8 centers across Delhi NCR and 660 students enrolled under our project. What started as an initiative to transform refugee education has now become a harbinger of hope for communities all across the country.

“The best way to predict the future is to create it”.

“Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember Involve me and I learn.”

At Taaleem, our primary focus is to capture our students’ imagination and manifest their creativity by making education simpler, more interactive and engaging for them.

So as to accomplish this, we follow an Active Story Based Learning (ASBL) model designed by us in association with our knowledge partner Katha.

Stories are every child’s very first tryst with education and concepts explained through stories are ones which get imprinted in one’s mind the quickest.

Hence, this approach was strategically adopted by us as this curriculum trains students in Language, Arithmetic and Science through the use of stories that are very comprehendible and instantly grab their attention.

What we Offer?

It also acts as a platform where teachers brainstorm and collaborate in developing curriculum and teaching materials.
  • Overview curriculum

Through our Active Story Based Learning (ASBL) the pupils are taught through the art of storytelling in the field of language , science and arithmetic. Thus, the students learn the fundamentals to think, ask, discuss, and act to become responsive, responsible citizens which leads to the social , political and cultural empowerment of children & the community itself.
  • Mainstreaming

In order to provide our children maximum avenues for their future, Taaleem makes it their primary objective to mainstream refugee children from our centres to formal schools. Mainstreaming assists children in their pursuit for higher studies and provides the crucial first step towards the integration of refugee community into society.at dolor.
